My collection of chairs is an exploration into three different eras of design, modernism, post-modernism, and minimalism. Using the materialistic and aesthetical values of the design eras, I have then applied these values to a singular frame that is carried throughout the project.
All chairs have been displayed in a virtual gallery created by myself in CAD.
Due to the brief that I have set my myself, each different design era that I have researched into has allowed me to find inspiration based on the aesthetical and material values of the chairs and stools of the era. Therefore, it has enabled me to gather inspiration from the source of the era, creating a better representation of the styles when introduced to my frame.
Some of the inspirations for my modernist chairs are the use of leather and metal tubing found in Marcel Breuer’s club chair and the cantilever aspect of the S33 chair by Mart Stam. I have been inspired by the modernist use of clean lines within the design as well as the use of mostly monochromatic colours in the material choice.
My inspirations for my minimalist chairs are Maarten Baas’ clay collection as well as Breuer’s club chair taken to another level of minimalism. I used the phrase “Less is more” frequently when designing my minimalist pieces as an inspiration for my pieces to be physically and aesthetically lighter.
Some inspirations for my post-modernist chairs include the Panton Chair created by Verner Panton and the Boalum flexible light created by Frattini & Castiglioni. I was inspired by the want to break the design norms introduced by the modernist era when designing my post-modernist chair by designing ‘cheeky’ and finding new ways to use of the original frame.
